Reading Journal: Do Less

by Kate Northrup

This book helped me rethink the hustle mindset – we keep taking on more and more to prove ourselves, but it is actually more beneficial to find a balance and work smarter instead of harder.

The author suggests that we can tune into our natural cycles and rhythms and use them to our advantage. By tracking energy levels and moods, we can tailor activities to suit the different inward and outward phases to optimize energy:

  • During the outward phases: Use this time to plan, brainstorm, initiate new projects, and presentations as this is when we are most articulate and magnetic, which suits collaboration
  • During the inward phases: Use this time to complete projects, wrap up and build in time for rest and reflection

Other key takeaways include letting go of the perfectionism mindset – embrace “good enough” instead of stressing over making everything perfect which drains time and energy. Also remember the 80/20 rule – 80% of your results come from 20% of your efforts. So it’s important to identify on the high impact tasks and focus on them rather than waste time and energy on activities that do not move the needle.

Lastly, let’s not forget about rest and play. Many of us take downtime as a luxury, but it is actually essential to take time to relax and have fun. Having a well-rested mind and body will make you more productive and creative.

Overall, this book offers a refreshing take on productivity and offers some good tips on how we can tune in our body and cycle. By working in alignment with our natural rhythm, we will be able to focus the right amount of energy on things that really matter, allowing us to achieve more without risking burnout.
