Romance

Reading Journal: Boys of Preston Prep series (Books 3 and 4)

by Angel Lawson and Samantha Rue

Book 3: Touched by the Devil (Sebastien’s and Sugar’s story)

About this book

Sugar Voss is from the wrong side of the tracks, on scholarship to an elite school Preston Prep. She struggles with domestic abuse from her step-dad and as a result developed an aversion to touch.

Sebastien Wilcox is rich, popular and part of the Devils, a secret society at Preston Prep. He is loyal and protective but deals with constant bullying and threats from his older brother and his bad temper and impulsive nature gets him into all sorts of trouble.

Sebastien accidentally hurt Sugar the night they met, and he is determined to make amends. A steamy and angsty romance where both characters overcome past trauma to find their way together.

Book 4: Devil Incarnate (Heston’s and Georgia’s story)

About this book

Heston is Sebastien’s (from Book 3) older brother, the villain of the previous 3 books in the series, the biggest bully and manipulator of all. He’s at his lowest point now – disowned, reputation smeared and sent back to Preston Prep as assistant swimming coach to serve his community service to make amends for his past evil deeds.

Georgia is bright and sweet on the surface but deals with depression and suicidal thoughts resulting from her struggle with her hypersexuality and insecurities from a previously leaked sex tape. The tape that Heston leaked.

Heston’s return to Preston Prep puts them in each other’s paths again, and his role as her swimming coach puts them in close proximity which sorely tests Georgia’s resolve to stay away from the Devil.

Book review

I did not read the first 2 books in the series and only started with Sebastien’s and Sugar’s story – so yes, the books definitely can be read as standalones.

Going into the story, I was skeptical at first because the trauma and deviant thoughts and behaviour being portrayed seemed far beyond the 18-year old characters. The idea of a secret society that at most seems to play pranks at school events but portrayed to be such bad boys and girls seemed immature to me as well.

But somehow I got hooked onto the story. I loved Sebastien who was really sweet and patient with Sugar. The writing was masterful, focusing on the inner dialogue of the characters and takes the reader through the character and plot development superbly.

When I reached the end of Touched by the Devil, Kindle automatically prompted the next book in the series from Kindle store. I never expected the next story to be Heston’s who was an absolutely hated villain in Sebastien’s story out to hurt his brother and destroy his relationship with Sugar. But the raving reviews for Devil Incarnate made me curious, so I made a purchase and proceeded to binge read this next book.

And boy, was I glad that I read Heston’s story – I liked it even more than Sebastien’s. Again, the skillful writing by the authors transformed the hated villain into an unlikely hero with his devil may care attitude, a bad boy who struggles with his downfall from the top of the world. Georgia is admirable, with an inner strength to overcome her vulnerabilities and shame with her proud exterior.

I loved Michal, a side character who cross-dresses and is proudly gay and the biggest fan of Sebastien. It was so cute when he bonds with Heston over their love of a teen drama show, something which we don’t expect the bad boy to be a fan over and which Gerogia rolls her eyes at Heston’s and Michal’s shared weekly obsession over the drama.
