Reading Journal: Caught a Vibe

by Eva Moore

About this book

This is a romance set in the Covid pandemic times. Dash is a video games reviewer. He meets Penny, CEO of a sex toys company at a tech convention. Sparks flew, they had a one-night stand, then return to their respective cities but continued to keep in touch.

When Penny caught Covid, Dash shows up at her doorstep and nurses her back to health. However, as he had given up his apartment and due to quarantine restrictions, they ended up staying together in Penny’s apartment. Personalities clash, with Dash being a messy roommate in contrast with Penny who is a neat freak.

Book review

I found the setting unique, realistic, and absolutely relatable having lived through the Covid pandemic and quarantine restrictions ourselves. It reminded me of my own experience with working from home, being anxious about my background whenever I had video meetings, wearing nice tops with pyjama bottoms, and the stress of being cooped up. It was also hilarious where Dash ended up writing numerous articles about lockdown driven activities such as cooking at home, recommendations on houseplants, etc which we absolutely saw during the pandemic in real life.

Both characters have their vulnerabilities. Dash is sweet and supportive towards Penny, however harbours insecurities about now being good enough of her because he struggles with ADHD and unable to properly focus enough to find satisfaction in his job. Penny is ambitious and capable, but leans towards micro managing to get control when things don’t go her way.

It was heartwarming to read about Dash and Penny growing and stepping out from their self-doubts and misconceptions and eventually build confidence in their love for each other. I enjoyed the book and it was fun to re-live the pandemic now that it’s behind us.
