Stuff Your Kindle Day takes place four times a year, where thousands of romance e-books become free to download for a limited period of time. I got to know about this event through social media and was quick to jump onto the wagon when it came around on September 20 this year.
This event is organized by Romance Bookworms and they provide an amazing list of all participating books, sorted by e-book retailer and sub-genre. I spent a full day trawling through the list and making the free purchase. At the end of the day, I had 120 new books on my Kindle!

Being a tad cynical, I did get the impression that while many of the books are standalone novels, they tend to be part of a series. So the free book feels like a hook to get the reader interested and tempted to purchase the other books in the series. Great marketing attempt, and works especially well with me because I love a good romance series.
Regardless of the rather obvious marketing angle, it was a great way to get to know authors whom I’ve not come across before and to sample their works without having to pay for it. It’s a risk-free way to try out something new. And the list from Romance Bookworms makes it so easy to scroll through the offering without having to deal with the search and filter functions from the retailers.
And I must say, I’m usually fairly bad at sourcing new books to read. If I like an author, I will search for and read the author’s books exclusively. Since I definitely read much faster than anyone could write, I always run out of books to read and have to source for a new author to get into. So it’s such a great feeling now knowing that I can pick up my Kindle at any time, and have plenty of books and new authors waiting for me to get into.
This is the start of a binge reading season for sure. I’ve started reading through the first few books now and have definitely found a few authors whom I like and will start to keep a lookout for. There was also a book which I’ve dumped into my DNF folder in my Kindle, so I’m glad I didn’t have to pay for it. (I hate DNFs though, which is why I kept it in a separate folder to come back to for a second chance at some point. Maybe my mind just wasn’t in the right place for the book then.)
I will share more on these books in a next post. In case anyone’s interested, the next Stuff Your Kindle Day is coming up on December 27, so mark your calendars!
