How reading changes with moods

Do you notice how your reading habits change with your moods?

Because I’ve been more conscious about tracking and reflecting on my reading, I began to notice certain trends in my reading.

In the first and last few months of the year, I read more non-fiction than fiction. Perhaps these are more relaxed periods where work winds down, and people naturally reflect on the year and what they want to achieve in the following year. This tends to put me in learning mode and I find myself picking up books to learn on a variety of different topics, hoping to improve myself in the new year.

As the months flow by into the middle of the year, work peaks and we find ourselves stuck in the grind of daily life. It is during this period that I find myself gravitating towards lighter reads to de-stress. In this aspect, my default go-to is the romance genre which never fails to deliver the much needed escapism from the stresses of daily life.

The last month especially was extremely stressful at work. My reading reduced, and comprised exclusively romance novels. Work has not let up now in the beginning of August, and I find myself even now taking more than a week to finish a romance novel whereas my average duration in the past was only 2 to 3 days. On certain days I could not even find the mood and energy to continue reading my book.

Now more than ever, I look forward to a proper break where I can sit and read for hours with a cup of coffee.
